Roses Team

All players interested in joining our Roses team must attend tryouts. We hold an open tryout in November, where players have the opportunity to showcase their skills. From that session, a select group of players will be invited back for a final callback in December.

The final roster is chosen following the December callback, and players selected will represent our Roses team during the upcoming season.

The Roses tournament is for 12-year-old girls. For the 2026 Roses team, eligible players are those born in 2013 or later.

The Roses tournament begins the Monday after the Brick Invitational finals. In 2026, round-robin games will start on Monday, July 6, with the championship game and closing ceremonies held on Sunday, July 12.

The Roses Tournament is a six-day event that runs from Monday through Sunday. Round-robin games begin on Monday and continue throughout the week, with the finals and closing ceremonies taking place on Sunday.

Players must arrive in Edmonton at least one day before the tournament begins to account for travel, time zone adjustment, and team activities. The Junior Bruins try to schedule a team practice or scrimmage on Sunday late afternoon. Most years, families arrive on Saturday.

The championship game is held on Sunday at 11:00 AM, followed immediately by closing ceremonies, which all teams and players are required to attend. This includes the traditional on-ice jersey swap. Families should not book departing flights before 4:00 PM on Sunday to allow enough time for post-game activities and travel to the airport.

The Roses is a six game guarantee tournament. A team making it to the championship game could play as many as eight games and possibly nine.

Eligibility for the Junior Bruins Roses team is determined by geographical boundaries and import rules. Each team in the Roses tournament has a protected area from which they can select players. The Junior Bruins’ protected area includes Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island, allowing them to select as many players as they want from these states.

In addition to local players, the Junior Bruins are allowed up to three import players. An import is any player who lives outside of the team’s protected area. If a player lives within another team’s protected area but wishes to play for the Junior Bruins, they would need a release from that team and would still count as an import.

Unlike the Brick, the Roses tournament has a special rule: if a player lives approximately equidistant from multiple Roses teams, she may play for any of those teams without being considered an import.

Our release policy is consistent with all Roses charter programs. We will not issue a release to a player who wishes to join another Roses team unless they have gone through our tryout and selection process.

If a player skips any part of this process and then later requests a release after our team is selected, we will not grant one.

However, if a player attends our tryouts and is not selected for either the Roses team, we will gladly provide a release so they may pursue opportunities with another Roses team.

Yes. This is common and happens every year. Players from our residency-protected area are welcome to try out with another Roses team at the same time. Similarly, players from another team’s territory may also try out for the Junior Bruins in addition to their local Roses team.

In fact, in recent seasons we’ve had players from other territories make our team after going through both their local team’s tryout process and ours. The key requirement is that families must respect their local team’s process—skipping or trying to bypass it will only create delays in a player’s eligibility to play for our team.

No, players do not need to have previously played with the Junior Bruins to be considered for inclusion on the Roses team. Every year, the selection process begins with a clean slate, and the focus is on evaluating who shows up at tryouts. The best players are chosen regardless of their prior involvement with the program. While each year’s Roses team typically includes a mix of returning players and new faces, familiarity from playing with us in previous years is not a requirement.

However, we do encourage players interested on the Roses team to participate in our tryouts in the years leading up to the Roses year. Having familiarity with the players and families from previous involvement can be beneficial, as it helps us build relationships and better assess the fit for the team.

Absolutely. Every year, new players earn spots on our Roses team through the tryout process. While many returning players do make the team, it is never predetermined or “already picked,” despite what hockey rink rumors may suggest.

For example, our 2012 Roses team included 11 players who had skated with us in prior seasons and 6 new players who had never played with us before. That means one-third of the roster was made up of players who came to tryouts, impressed the staff, and earned their place.

History shows that talented new players not only make the team but also play important roles. Every player who attends tryouts has a legitimate opportunity to be selected.

When selecting players for the Roses team, we’re looking for more than just raw talent. While skill is important, the focus is on finding players who are committed to playing a team-first game, excelling in all three zones, and doing the little things that contribute to winning. It’s crucial to build a balanced roster with players who can fill specific roles, whether it’s a left-shot winger, a right-shot defenseman, someone with size, or a player who brings exceptional speed.

The selection process includes open tryouts and thorough scouting by our staff throughout the fall and winter. This approach ensures that we identify players who not only meet our needs but also fit well within the team dynamic. It’s not just about picking the most talented individuals—it’s about finding the right mix of players to build a cohesive and competitive team.
