MARLBORO, MA-The Junior Bruins capped off a regular season USPHL title by defeating the Syracuse Stars 3-2 in overtime at the Beantown Spring Classic to be crowned playoff champions.
Overall, the Bruins finished the regular season with a 38-5-0-1 league record settling 8 points clear of Syracuse. Despite losing three regular forwards for the year with injuries the B’s were able to find another gear in the playoffs going a perfect 8-0 outscoring their opponents 42-6. In the finals the team was down 2-0 late in the second period before Jake McKinnon got things going. Mike Moran would tie it with less than 2 minutes to play and the Henry brothers won it in overtime. “That’s the way this team was all year. We won so many games like that. It’s a testament to how much these kids enjoyed playing together,” head coach Nevin Hamilton commented following the game.
In addition to the B’s success within the league they enjoyed good fortune outside USPHL play as well. In October the Elite’s entered the Beantown Fall Classic as an at large team and advanced to the tournament’s semi-final round. In January they traveled to Lake Placid, NY and repeated as Northwood Prep’s Junior hockey invitational tournament champions.
Through this process many of the Elites garnered the attention of college coaches. In all, thirteen Bruins Elite players received offers to play college hockey at the NCAA level next season. A few others will move up to the Premier team for the 2015-16 season and others will return to the Elites in increased roles. “Playing in events like the Junior Bruins Shootout, Beantown Fall Classic and the Northwood tournament really helped our players as a compliment to the great battles we had in our league. It gave us a robust schedule, increased exposure and allowed schools to see our college ready players in a slightly different light. It also made us tougher and we were battle tested to go on a playoff run and use all of the depth on our team which we needed in the end”, added Associate Head Coach Dan Gordon.
With the win the B's are now headed to Nationals at the end of March.
Congratulations to the USPHL Elite Junior Bruins on their playoff championship.
